The 12th International Cognitive Linguistics Conference (ICLC) is being held 23-28 June 2013 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. ICLC is the biennial conference of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association.

Synchrony and diachrony in cognitive linguistics

This contribution looks both backwards and forwards in considering the integration of synchronic and diachronic perspectives in the growing domain of cognitive linguistics. If we look back twenty-five years to 1987, we find ourselves in a period in which the huge surge of interest in grammaticalization was just beginning. We find links to cognition in theoretical language studies to be firmly grounded in a static synchronic state. We also find the work of functional-typological linguists (beginning with Joseph Greenberg, but including Givon, Thompson, Li, Hopper and others) making only tangential reference to cognitive processes. Developments from that era to the present have included intense study of grammaticalization and the cognitive processes that make the creation of grammar possible, along with the realization that most if not all of these processes are not specific to language, but are processes of general cognition. A second development since 1987 is a growing interest across the sciences in complex adaptive systems. Applications of the notion of emergence to linguistic systems provides us with a new way of viewing linguistic structures and understanding them, not in terms of static givens, but rather as dynamic, constantly evolving patterns. As the future unfolds, a better understanding of the directionality of linguistic change will also inform our understanding of the way cognitive processes are used in communicative events. Directionality in change is a key concept that can delineate languages typologically and provide for explanations of languagespecific as well as crosslinguistic phenomena. My presentation will illustrate these stages in the development of cognitive linguistics by providing specific examples and analyses from morphosyntax, semantics and phonology.
